The Waterway 502-5010 is a top load cartridge filter with 50 square feet of media, 2 inch connections and a bypass.
Top load servicing
A top load housing opens at the lid, so cleaning the element is a matter of shutting the pump down, relieving pressure, lifting the lid and pulling the cartridge. The plumbing stays where it is. That is the main practical difference from a side load filter, and it is why these are common on tight equipment pads.
Cartridge, not sand
There is no backwash cycle on a cartridge filter. When pressure climbs, you rinse or soak the element and put it back. That uses far less water than backwashing, at the cost of handling the cartridge by hand.
