What the brushes do
A robotic cleaner picks up debris with its filter, but it only gets the film off the surface by scrubbing it loose first. That is the brushes. Once they wear down, the cleaner still drives its pattern and still fills the canister, yet the floor and walls come up dull because nothing is lifting the fine layer for the filter to catch.
