What the air bleed does
Every filter tank traps air as it fills. The bleed assembly on top of the tank is what lets that air out, so the tank packs with water and the pressure gauge reads the real filter pressure rather than an air pocket. When the adapter is damaged or the threads are stripped, the bleed either leaks under pressure or will not seal at all.
