The Pentair 271096 is the bulkhead union kit for filters plumbed without a valve. It comes in white and includes two slip filter adapters, which is what makes up both connections at the tank.

Why a union kit

Unions are the difference between a filter that can be opened up for service and one that has to be cut out of the plumbing. On an installation that runs straight pipe into the filter, with no multiport or slide valve between them, this is the hardware that makes those connections and lets them be broken loose later.
