What it is for
The drain plug sits at the bottom of the filter tank. It comes out to drain the tank for winterizing, for a cartridge or grid change, or any time the filter has to be emptied before it is opened.
Why it fails
Two things kill drain plugs. The o-ring hardens or tears, which shows up as a slow drip at the base of the tank that never quite stops. Or the plug body cracks from being cranked down too hard on a seal that was already leaking. Since the plug and o-ring come as one item here, both are handled at once.
Worth keeping spare
These plugs are small, they come out at closing time and they get dropped into the leaves. Having one on the shelf is cheaper than delaying a closing.
