What the air bleed does
Air collects at the top of a filter tank every time the system is opened or the water level drops far enough to let the pump draw air. The bleed is how that air gets out. When it stops passing air cleanly the tank keeps a pocket at the top, the pressure gauge reads oddly and flow through the filter suffers.
