The Pentair 178583 is the genuine air bleed tube assembly for the Clean and Clear 520 cartridge filter and the Quad D.E. 100. It is the current version of the part and replaces all of the earlier air bleed assemblies used on those filters.
Superseded design
The version this replaces had a white cap that looked very similar to the pipe it was attached to, and it is no longer produced. If that is what is on your filter, this assembly is the correct replacement.
What it does
Every time the pump starts, air collects at the top of the filter tank. The bleed assembly gives that air a path out so the tank fills with water. Trapped air keeps part of the element dry, drops effective filter area, and can make the tank pressure readings misleading. A cracked or blocked bleed tube is worth changing rather than working around.
