The Pentair 170040 is the genuine OEM bottom manifold for the Clean and Clear Plus cartridge filter, for units built after December 2000. It sits in the base of the tank and carries the lower end of each filter cartridge.
What it does
A cartridge filter only works if every drop of water is forced through the media. The manifolds are what make that happen: the bottom manifold locates and seals the lower end of each cartridge, and the top manifold does the same at the other end. Between them the cartridges are held square, on center, and sealed against bypass.
When it needs replacing
Cracked ports, a split body, or a manifold that no longer holds cartridges upright all mean the same thing in practice. Water finds the gap and skips the media, so the pool stays cloudy while the cartridges look perfectly clean. If you have cleaned or replaced the cartridges and the water still is not clearing, open the tank and look at the manifolds.
