The Polaris R0517800 is the all purpose fine filter canister for the 9300 Sport, 9300xi Sport and 9400 Sport robotic pool cleaners. It is the genuine Polaris part, made in plastic, and it is the canister these cleaners come with from the factory.
What it is for
The canister is the whole filtration system on a robotic cleaner. Everything the brushes lift has to be held in it until you pull the cleaner out and rinse it. The all purpose fine canister is set up for normal pool dirt and fine debris, which is what most pools produce most of the year.
When to change it
Rinse the canister at the end of every cycle and it will last a long time. What ends it is physical damage: torn mesh, a cracked housing, or a load that has packed in so hard it will not rinse clean. Any of those lets debris straight back into the pool and the cleaner appears to stop working. A lot of owners keep a spare so one canister can dry while the other is in the machine.
Other canisters
Polaris builds sand and silt and leaf canisters for these same cleaners. Those are worth adding if your pool throws a specific kind of debris, but the all purpose fine canister is the one for general use.
