What a ball valve is for
A ball valve is a shut off, not a diverter. A quarter turn of the handle takes it from fully open to fully closed. Fitted either side of the pump, filter or heater, a pair of these lets you open that equipment up for service without draining the whole system back to the pool.
Fitting
Both ends are slip sockets, so they are solvent welded to 2 inch PVC pipe. Dry fit first and check the handle has room to swing before you cement anything, because there is no adjustment once the joint sets.
