What the headers do
The headers are the moulded ends that cap the heat exchanger tube bundle and turn the water through it. Every gallon the heater warms passes through them, under pressure, at temperature, season after season.
Why they get replaced
Capron headers craze and crack with age, chemistry and thermal cycling, and once one is weeping at the body it will not hold a sealant repair. Replacing both ends together is the normal fix, since an original header on the other side of the exchanger is usually the same age and the same distance from failing.
