Why the weights matter
A pressure side cleaner is only as good as the way its feed hose lies in the water. The weights hold sections of hose below the surface so it trails behind the cleaner instead of arcing upward. When they are missing or damaged the hose floats, wraps around itself, catches the ladder or handrail, and pulls the cleaner back before it reaches the far end of the pool.
Fitting them
The weights clip onto the hose, so nothing has to be cut or unthreaded. Position is the part people get wrong: set them at the spacing your cleaner manual specifies rather than wherever the hose seems to lift, because the layout is what balances the hose along its whole length.
