How the cell works
Salt chlorination puts the chlorine production inside the equipment pad. Dissolved salt in the pool water passes through the cell, an electrical current across the coated plates converts it to chlorine, and the chlorine goes back into the pool. Nobody is opening buckets or carrying jugs, and the salt is not consumed, so it stays in circulation.
Cells wear out, and that is normal
The coating on the plates is what does the work, and it degrades a little every hour the cell runs. Output tapers off rather than stopping suddenly, so the usual sign is a pool that cannot hold a chlorine residual even though the salt level is right and the cell has been cleaned. At that point the cell is due, and the control unit and plumbing stay where they are.
Getting the size right
This is the 60,000 gallon rating. Going larger than the pool is harmless: the system simply runs a shorter cycle each day. Going smaller is the mistake, because an undersized cell has to run near constantly to keep up and burns through its life much faster. Match the rating to the pool or go above it.
