The seal that lets a pump prime
The lid O-Ring closes the strainer pot. That pot has to hold a vacuum for the pump to draw water up out of the skimmer, so this one soft ring is doing more work than its price suggests. When it hardens, cracks or takes a permanent flat, air leaks in past the lid. The symptom is a pump that struggles to prime, a basket that keeps a bubble of air in it, or a stream of small bubbles at the returns.
Fitting and care
Clean the lid groove and the sealing face on the pot before the new ring goes on, and dress it with a silicone based O-Ring lubricant rather than a petroleum grease. Lubricated, the lid seats evenly and lifts off cleanly at the next basket clean instead of tearing.
