What the rings do
The sweep hose is the tail that whips behind the cleaner, driving debris off steps, corners and the floor so the cleaner can pick it up. That tail spends its life dragging across the pool surface. The wear rings are what take that abrasion, sacrificing themselves so the hose does not wear through.
When to change them
Look at the rings whenever the cleaner is out of the water. Once they are worn thin, split or missing, bare hose is riding on the pool finish, which shortens the hose and can leave marks on plaster or a liner. Because they are sold one at a time, count what your tail carries before ordering rather than assuming a set.
