What the brushes do
A manual vacuum head does not just suck. The brushes scuff dirt loose from the floor a fraction of a second before the suction slot passes over it, and they hold the head at the right ride height so that slot works. When they wear down, the head starts skating on plastic, the slot sits too low or too high, and fine dirt gets left behind no matter how slowly you pull.
