Product details
The Waterway 550-4350 is the D.E. grid support assembly for 60 square foot diatomaceous earth filters, supplied with a 32 in. PVC shaft. It is the genuine Waterway part.
The job it does
A D.E. filter is a stack of grids held in a frame inside the tank. The support assembly is that frame. It sets the spacing between grids and keeps the whole stack square, which is what allows the D.E. charge to coat every element evenly. When the water is doing the work, that geometry is the whole design.
What failure looks like
When a support cracks or distorts, grids start to lean and touch. They then rub against each other under flow and wear through at the contact point, and once a grid is holed the D.E. goes straight back to the pool as a fine grey cloud. Owners tend to replace the grid first and find the problem returns, because the support that damaged it is still in the tank.
