Identifying it
The shaft is metal, with a hole through one end and five grooves along its length: three large grooves and two smaller ones. Comparing that groove pattern against the shaft you are pulling out is the quickest way to confirm you have the right part.
Why the shaft matters
A Perflex does not backwash the way a grid filter does. It is cleaned by working the bump handle, which shakes the flex tubes and spreads the diatomaceous earth coating back out evenly. That whole action runs through this shaft. If it is bent, seized or snapped, bumping does nothing and pressure climbs until the filter has to be opened.

The bump shaft comes out during the same tear down as the diaphragm gasket, the tank o-ring and the retainer clip, so it is worth checking those parts at the same time rather than opening the filter twice.
