The Hayward ECX5000F is the 1-1/2 inch bump shaft used in Perflex D.E. filters. It is the genuine Hayward part, made in metal like the original.
How a Perflex cleans itself
Perflex filters do not get backwashed the way a sand filter does. They get bumped. The handle on top of the tank drives this shaft, the shaft moves the flex tube assembly inside, and the shock knocks the spent D.E. coating off the tubes so it can settle and a fresh coat can be applied. Everything in that chain runs through the bump shaft.
The symptom
When the shaft bends, breaks or comes loose, the handle either moves with no resistance at all or moves without doing anything to the pressure. Owners often assume the tubes are blinded and start replacing them, when the shaft is what has actually failed.
