Product details

The Hayward SPX1480C is the union nut used on the S240 side mount sand filter. It is the genuine Hayward part, sold as the nut alone.

What it does

A union lets you break the plumbing at the filter without cutting pipe. The nut is the piece that threads over the joint and draws the two halves together against the seal. All of the clamping load sits on it, which is why it is the part that fails: years of sun make the plastic brittle, and a nut that has been cranked with a wrench eventually splits at the threads or the flange.

Fitting

Pull the nut up by hand against the seal. If it will not hold without a wrench, the problem is the seal or the mating face, not the amount of force. The o-ring and the filter gasket are separate parts, and it is worth replacing the seal while the joint is open.

Hayward lists this nut for the S200 and S240 side mount sand filters, and it also appears under the Pro Series side mount and Perflex DE filter parts lists. Compare the part number stamped on your old nut before ordering.

Does the nut come with an o-ring?
No. This listing is the SPX1480C nut on its own. The o-ring and the filter gasket are sold separately.
