What it does
A union lets you break the plumbing at the filter without cutting pipe. The nut is the piece that threads over the joint and draws the two halves together against the seal. All of the clamping load sits on it, which is why it is the part that fails: years of sun make the plastic brittle, and a nut that has been cranked with a wrench eventually splits at the threads or the flange.
