Why the elbow matters
Above ground plumbing is short and the hose usually has to turn as soon as it leaves the filter. With a straight adapter that turn happens in the hose itself, which kinks it and puts constant side load on the fitting. The elbow makes the turn in rigid plastic instead, so the hose leaves straight and the connection is not fighting it.
