The Waterway 550-4200 is the top manifold with air screen for the Crystal Water DE filter. It is the part inside the tank that the grid pack seats into.
What it does
Filtered water leaves each DE grid through its top port and gathers in the manifold before heading back to the pool. The manifold holds the grids in position and keeps the clean side of the filter separated from the dirty side. The air screen on top handles air that works its way to the highest point of the tank.
Why it gets replaced
Manifolds crack. Years of heat cycling, the odd knock during a grid cleaning and any freeze that catches water in the tank all take their toll. Once there is a split, DE powder bypasses the grids and goes straight back to the pool, so the water stays cloudy and the filter never seems to hold a charge. Check the manifold whenever the grid pack is out.
