What the exchanger does
Everything else in a pool heater exists to serve the heat exchanger. The burner fires beneath it, pool water passes through it, and the heat crosses from one to the other there. When the exchanger corrodes through, scales up or splits, the heater either stops making usable heat or starts leaking water into the cabinet, and no amount of work on the controls will change that.
Before you order
Confirm the model on the heater plate. This kit is specified for the R266A and R267A digital low NOx units, and Raypak lists different exchangers for the 206, 336 and 406 sizes. If you have chased down the leak and it is at the exchanger rather than at a header or a fitting, this is the part.
