The Pentair 24700-0075Z is a 4.5 inch long lateral assembly for high rate sand filters, supplied as the lateral only.

What a lateral does

Laterals are the slotted fingers that thread into the collector hub at the bottom of the tank, under the sand bed. The slots are sized to let filtered water through to the underdrain while holding the sand back. When one cracks or its slots wear open, sand begins returning to the pool through the returns, which is usually the first symptom an owner notices.
