When to replace it
An o-ring is a simple round gasket that seals two machined faces against each other. Here it seals the filter tank joint. Over the seasons the rubber hardens, flattens and loses its spring, and the joint begins to weep under pressure. A new ring is the fix, and because the tank has to be opened to change sand anyway, most techs replace it as part of a media change.
Fitting
Clean both sealing faces, seat the ring square in its groove without stretching it, and use a silicone based o-ring lubricant. Petroleum grease attacks the rubber and shortens the life of the seal.
