What it seals
The drain cap at the bottom of a filter tank does not seal on its threads. It seals on this gasket, squeezed between the cap and the tank. That is why a tank can be bone dry all season and then start dripping at the drain: the rubber has taken a set, gone hard, or picked up a nick from grit on the sealing face.
Fitting it
Clean the seat before the new gasket goes on. A single grain of sand or a ridge of old rubber left on the face will hold the gasket open and put you right back where you started. A light film of silicone lubricant helps the gasket seat and makes the cap easier to remove next season. Avoid petroleum greases on rubber seals; they swell the material and shorten its life.
Because the cap comes off at every winterization, it is worth keeping one of these in the parts box rather than discovering the old gasket is finished on the day you are closing the pool.
