Product details

The Sta-Rite 24901-0003 is a sand filter lateral, listed for the S8S70. It is the genuine Sta-Rite part.

What it does

Laterals are the slotted arms at the bottom of a sand filter tank. Filtered water leaves through the slots while the sand is held back. When one cracks, the sand goes with the water and turns up on the pool floor a day later.

Before you order

The part is named for the S8S70 and is filed with the System 3 sand filter parts covering both the S7S50 and the S8S70, so match your filter model plate before ordering. Reaching the laterals means opening the tank and getting the sand out, which is the real work here, so check every lateral and the bulkhead seal while you are in there.

Questions and answers

What people ask about this product, answered by our pool techs.

What does a lateral do?
It is a slotted arm on the filter underdrain. Water passes out through the slots while the sand stays behind in the tank.
Which filter is it for?
The listing names the S8S70, and it is filed under the System 3 sand filter parts covering the S7S50 and S8S70. Check your model plate before ordering, because the two models use different laterals.
Why am I getting sand in the pool?
A cracked or split lateral is the most common cause. Once a slot opens up, sand travels straight through the underdrain and out to the returns, and backwashing will not fix it.
Should I replace just the one?
You can, but the laterals in a tank have all aged the same. With the sand out and the underdrain exposed it is worth inspecting every one rather than repeating the job next season.
