What goes wrong
A leaf trap gets opened constantly. The latch takes the load every time the lid is clamped down, and the o-ring is repeatedly compressed, dried out in the sun and dragged over the rim. Either one failing shows up the same way: a lid that will not seal no matter how hard it is pushed down.
Replacing both
Since the latch and o-ring are supplied together, there is no guessing which of the two is at fault. Fit the new o-ring clean and dry seated properly in its groove, then set the new latch, and the trap seals as it did when it was new.
