Product details

The Pentair 73998 is the natural gas valve for MiniMax pool heaters running the intermittent ignition device system. It is the genuine Pentair part, printed on the valve as 073998.

Natural gas only

Gas valves are fuel specific. This one is for natural gas. If the heater runs on propane, or has been converted, the valve is a different part number and this one is not a substitute.

Which heaters

Our source material does not agree with itself on the model range. One reference lists the valve for MiniMax heaters 120 through 400, another files it under MiniMax Plus 150 through 400. Both point at the same family of heaters, but the safe move is to read the model number and BTU rating off the data plate on your heater and check it against the Pentair parts breakdown for that exact model.

Fitting it

On an intermittent ignition heater, the gas valve is what opens on a call for heat once the control has proved the ignition sequence. When a heater sparks but never lights, or lights and drops out, the valve is on the short list of causes along with the igniter, the pressure switches and the control board. Changing it means breaking a gas union and leak testing the joint afterwards, which is licensed work in most places. Have a qualified gas technician do the swap.

Will this work on a propane heater?
No. This is the natural gas valve. A propane heater needs the propane valve, and a natural gas valve cannot simply be reused after a fuel conversion.
Which MiniMax sizes does it cover?
The source is not consistent. One reference gives the range as MiniMax 120 to 400 and another files it under MiniMax Plus 150 to 400. Read the model and BTU rating off the heater data plate and check it against the Pentair parts list for that heater.
What is IID?
Intermittent ignition device. Instead of a standing pilot, the heater lights the pilot or burner electronically on each call for heat, and the gas valve is part of that sequence.
Can I fit it myself?
Replacing a gas valve means opening a live gas connection and leak testing afterwards. In most areas that is licensed work, and it should be done by a qualified gas or pool heater technician.
