Where it is used

Why it matters
On the discharge side a tired union o-ring drips. On the suction side it does something worse: it lets air in, so the pump loses prime and the basket fills with air instead of water. Either symptom at a union points at the o-ring first.
Fitting it
Wipe the groove clean, lubricate the new o-ring, and tighten the union collar by hand. Union collars are not meant to be pulled up with a wrench, and overtightening cracks the collar without improving the seal.
