Product details

The Perma-Cast TN-LD Technode is a sacrificial zinc ladder anode with 27 square inches of zinc, sized to fit any 1.9 in. pool ladder rail.

Why a pool needs an anode

Pool water carrying salt and sanitizer is an electrolyte, and metal in contact with it corrodes. A sacrificial anode gives that corrosion somewhere better to go. Zinc sits lower on the galvanic scale than the stainless and other metals in a pool, so it gives itself up first and the ladder, the rails and the fittings are spared while it lasts.

Fitting and checking it

The Technode mounts at the ladder and Perma-Cast lists it as accommodating any 1.9 in. ladder rail, which is the common rail size. Once it is in, treat it as an inspection item. An anode that is disappearing is doing exactly what it was bought for, and it needs replacing once most of the zinc is gone. Perma-Cast also builds inline anodes for the plumbing and anodes for a metal filter or heater core, and larger installations often run more than one.

Look at it. An anode that is wasting away is working. Once a large share of the zinc is gone, it can no longer protect anything and should be replaced. Checking it once a season is a reasonable habit.
