What part of the pump this is
The trap basket housing is the pot ahead of the impeller. Water enters it, the basket inside catches leaves and debris before they reach the impeller, and the lid seals the top. This listing is the pot itself. The basket, the lid and the lid o-ring are all separate Pentair items.
Why it gets replaced
A pot fails by cracking, by losing a clean sealing surface at the lid, or by damage at the threads or the plumbing connection. Any of those lets air into the suction side, and the symptom is a pump that will not hold prime no matter how many o-rings you fit. Replacing the housing restores a sound, sealed suction side.
