Pipe runs are rarely perfectly square to the equipment they feed. Fitting and service
The slip sockets solvent weld to standard 1-1/2 inch PVC with primer and cement. Once it is in, the nut is a hand tight fitting. Do not put a wrench on it: the nut and the flange are the parts that crack, and a union that is snug by hand and still leaking almost always needs the seal cleaned or replaced rather than more force.
