Product details

Waterway 400-3090 is a self-aligning union in 1-1/2 inch slip. It is the fitting that turns a permanent glued pipe run into something that comes apart, which is why a union usually sits on both sides of every piece of equipment on a well built pad.

What self-aligning buys you

Pipe runs are rarely perfectly square to the equipment they feed. A self-aligning union lets the two halves settle against each other as the nut is drawn up, so the sealing face is loaded evenly rather than pinched on one side. That is the difference between a joint that seals first time and one that weeps every time it is reassembled.

Fitting and service

The slip sockets solvent weld to standard 1-1/2 inch PVC with primer and cement. Once it is in, the nut is a hand tight fitting. Do not put a wrench on it: the nut and the flange are the parts that crack, and a union that is snug by hand and still leaking almost always needs the seal cleaned or replaced rather than more force.

What does slip mean here?
Slip is a solvent weld socket. The pipe slides into the fitting and is glued with PVC primer and cement, rather than screwing in.
What makes it self-aligning?
The union body lets the two halves find square to each other as the nut is tightened, so a small amount of misalignment in the pipe run does not put the seal on an angle.
Should I use a wrench on the nut?
No. Unions of this type are meant to be drawn up by hand. Overtightening with a wrench is the most common way the nut or the flange gets cracked.
Where is the best place to fit one?
Either side of anything you expect to remove: a pump, a filter, a heater or a chlorinator. Two unions turn a cut and reglue job into a five minute swap.
