What it is for
A plug like this closes a threaded port that is not being used, or seals a drain point once a filter is put back into service. It is a small part with an outsized consequence: a port left open or badly sealed will empty a filter tank, and a plug that has cracked with age will do the same thing quietly, over hours, while the pump loses prime.
Fitting it
NPT is a tapered thread, so it seals by wedging as it goes in rather than by being cranked down hard against a face. Thread it in until it is snug and stop there. Plastic ports split when someone reaches for a longer wrench to chase a drip, and at that point the repair becomes a great deal more expensive than the plug. If the original plug used an O-ring, inspect it and replace it if it is flat or hardened.
