The Hayward SP1481 is a Full-Flo self-aligning union with a 1-1/2 inch slip fitting on each end, molded in white ABS. It is the genuine Hayward part.
What a union buys you
Glued plastic pipe is permanent. Once a joint is welded, the only way past it is a saw. A union breaks that run deliberately: two halves that thread together around a seal, so the pipe or the piece of equipment beyond it can be removed and put back as many times as needed.
The self-aligning part
Pipe runs on an equipment pad are rarely dead square, and a rigid union fitted to two pipes that do not quite line up will leak or crack. The Full-Flo self-aligning double male end design absorbs that small offset so the union still seals.
Fitting
Both ends are slip, so they solvent weld onto 1-1/2 inch pipe with standard primer and cement. Fit unions where you know you will want to break the line later, which usually means each side of the pump, the filter and the heater.
