The Waterway 711-4050 is the 1.5 in heater o-ring gasket. It is the genuine Waterway replacement, a single piece that combines a flat sealing face with a molded o-ring extension.

The dimensions Waterway gives

The gasket measures 2-5/16 in across the outside and 1-7/16 in across the inside, with a flat section 3/32 in thick and a total thickness of 3/16 in once the o-ring extension is counted. The source lists the extension separately as about 3/32 in thick with a 2-5/8 in outside diameter and a 2-3/8 in inside diameter. Those extension figures are larger than the gasket figures quoted above them, so measure the old gasket before you order if the fit is critical.

Fitting

A weeping heater union is almost always the gasket, not the nut, and tightening harder on a hardened or split gasket only makes it worse. Seat the new gasket fully into its recess so it cannot roll or pinch, then run the union nut up hand tight and check for a drip under pressure.

My union drips even when the nut is tight. Will this fix it?
Usually. On a union the gasket does the sealing, not the nut, so more torque on a hardened or split gasket just deforms it further. Replacing the gasket is the correct repair.
Is it a flat gasket or an o-ring?
Both in one piece. It has a flat sealing face with a molded o-ring extension, which is why the source quotes two different thicknesses for it.
