What the clamp does

A sand filter runs under pressure, and the clamp is what holds the lid against the tank while that pressure pushes it the other way. It is a small part doing a serious job, which is why it is the piece on a filter that gets replaced rather than repaired.

When to replace it

Look for rust, cracking at the ears, a band that has lost its shape, or hardware that no longer draws the clamp up evenly. Any of those and the clamp is done. Fit the complete assembly rather than mixing new hardware onto an old band.
