What the clamp does
The clamp is the piece that pulls the face rim tight against the lens gasket. That clamping force is what keeps water out of the fixture, so a clamp that has corroded, stretched or lost its hardware is not a cosmetic problem. It is the reason a light floods.
When to replace it
Clamp hardware lives in pool water for its whole life and rust or a seized screw is common by the time a light is opened for a lamp or gasket change.
