The one screw that matters

An Astrolite is held into its niche by a single lockscrew through the top of the face rim. That one fastener carries the whole fixture, and it is also the only thing between a service tech and the lamp. It lives underwater in chlorinated water for years at a time.

Why they get replaced

The head corrodes, the driver slot fills with scale, and the screw rounds off the first time anyone tries to back it out. Once it has been drilled, cut or forced free, it does not go back in. Fitting a new lockscrew with its fastener returns the light to something that can be opened normally.

Good practice

If you are already pulling the light for a lamp or a lens gasket, put a fresh lockscrew in while it is out. It is the cheapest part of the job and it is the one that decides how the next service goes.
