Why hardware is sold as a set

A clamp screw and its nut wear together. Threads gall, corrosion builds in the gap, and by the time the screw is unusable the nut usually is too. Selling the screw, nut and washer as one part avoids the situation where a new screw goes straight into a tired nut and strips on the first tightening.

When to change it

Replace the hardware if the screw is corroded, if it turns without drawing the clamp tighter, or if it takes real force to move. Clamping force is what makes the joint seal, so hardware that cannot be pulled up properly is a leak waiting to happen.
