What it does
Inside a DE filter the grid pack has to stay square and centered in the tank while water drives through it. The element grid support is the piece that keeps that assembly located. When it cracks the pack can shift under flow, and grids that rub or lean end up torn, which puts DE powder back into the pool.
When to change it
The support is worth a look every time the filter is opened for a grid cleaning. It is far easier to replace while the tank is already apart than to go back in later after a damaged support has taken a set of grids with it.
