When you need it
Any time the header comes off the heater, the o-rings that sealed it should be replaced rather than reused. Rubber that has spent a season compressed between hot metal faces takes a permanent set, and once it has, it will not seal reliably against a fresh clamping load. A header that still weeps after a repair is very often a reused o-ring.
Why it matters
Water escaping at the header does not stay outside the heater. It runs down inside the cabinet onto the burner tray and the control components, which turns a cheap seal into an expensive repair. Fitting the correct Hayward kit when the header is already open is the inexpensive path.
