What the pilot tube does
The pilot tube is the small gas line that runs from the gas valve to the pilot burner. The pilot is what lights the main burners, so if that line is crimped, corroded or leaking, the heater either fails to light or lights and drops out again. It is one of the first things a technician looks at on a heater that will not stay running.
