Why hi-limits fail
A hi-limit spends its life in the heater header, cycling with every call for heat. Over the years the switch can fail open, and when it does the heater stops firing even though the water is cold and everything else looks normal. Low flow, a dirty filter or a closed valve can also trip a healthy limit, so it is worth confirming flow before condemning the switch.
