The Hayward HAXBPK1932 is the new style bypass kit for H-Series, ED1 and ED2 heaters built after 10-28-2000. It arrives complete: the black plastic baffle, the round plastic bypass end, the stainless bypass shaft and plug, the bypass spring, and the HAXHOR1930 header o-ring.
What the bypass does
Not all the water going through the heater needs to pass across the heat exchanger. The bypass diverts part of the flow so the exchanger sees the right amount, which protects it from thermal stress and keeps the outlet temperature under control. The flow control thermostat sits in the 1-3/8 inch hole in the rounded end of the baffle.
Old style or new style
This matters more than the part number. The new style baffle is the longer one, with the single large thermostat hole and two 5/8 inch holes beside it, and it carries 0101421101 molded into the bottom face. Heaters built before 10-28-2000 take a different kit with brass fittings and a shorter baffle with two holes in total. Pull the old assembly and compare before ordering.
The o-ring
Because the header has to come off to reach the bypass, the header o-ring is in the box. Fit the new one rather than reusing a compressed o-ring that has been in service.
