Why ignitors fail
The ignitor takes the full thermal cycle every time the heater calls for heat, going from ambient to glowing and back again. Over enough cycles the element develops hairline cracks or simply goes open circuit. The heater then runs through its startup sequence, purges, and locks out without ever lighting the burner, which is the fault most owners describe as the heater trying but not starting.
Diagnosing before you swap
An ignitor and a dirty flame sensor produce similar symptoms, so it is worth checking both. The ignitor fails to light the burner at all. A failed flame sensor lets the burner light and then shuts it down seconds later because the control never sees flame. The flame sensor is a separate Hayward part.
