What the air box gaskets do
The air box is the sealed path that feeds combustion air to the burners. Those seals have to hold for the heater to burn the way it was designed to, and a leak there shows up as poor combustion and a heater that does not run right rather than as an obvious drip.
When to fit them
Once the front of the heater has been apart, the old gaskets are done. They compress in service and take a permanent set, so they will not reseal properly against the panel a second time. Have the kit on hand before the service rather than after, so the heater goes back together in one visit.
