The Hayward AXV408P is the gear box assembly used across the Pool Vac and Navigator suction cleaners, including the Pool Vac Ultra, the Pool Vac XL and the Navigator Pro. It ships as a complete assembly.

The symptom to look for

The gear box is what makes the cleaner change direction as it works the pool. When it fails, the cleaner keeps steering the same way, circles one part of the floor and winds the hose into a knot. If the head still drives but no longer turns, this is the part.

Try cleaning before you replace

Gear boxes seize on debris more often than they wear out. Dog hair in particular packs into them. Opening the old box, clearing it and reassembling is worth an hour before you buy a new one, and it costs nothing to try.

Red plate or black plate

Check the top plate on your existing gear box before ordering. This is the red top plate version. The black top plate gear box is a separate part and the two are not interchangeable, so getting this wrong means sending it back.

How do I know if I need the red or the black gear box?
Look at the top plate on the gear box in your cleaner. This part is the red top plate version and it is not interchangeable with the black one.
My cleaner keeps going in circles and the hose tangles. Is this the part?
That is the usual symptom of a gear box that is no longer changing the cleaner direction, so it is the first thing to check.
Can a gear box be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. They clog with dog hair and fine debris, and taking one apart and cleaning it out can restore it. If the gears themselves are worn or stripped, replace it.
Does this fit both the Pool Vac and the Navigator?
