What it does
The bushing is the bearing surface the cone gear turns on. It carries the gear and holds it in alignment while the gearbox drives the cleaner across the pool. It is a plain plastic bearing, so it wears steadily with hours in the water and grit finding its way into the housing.
Why it is worth changing
A worn bushing lets the cone gear sit off center and mesh badly. The gear teeth then take the load the bushing should have carried, and gears are the expensive part. If a cleaner is already open for gearbox work, the bushing is cheap enough that leaving the old one in rarely makes sense.
