Product details

Pentair 55025800 is the lateral underdrain for the 26 inch Meteor and Eclipse sand filters. It is a new genuine Pentair part.

What a lateral does

Laterals sit at the bottom of a sand filter, threaded into the hub around the standpipe. They are slotted so that filtered water can pass through into the standpipe while the sand bed stays where it is. That slot width is the whole design. Once a lateral cracks or a slot opens up, sand runs straight through the filter and comes back into the pool through the returns.

Fitment and installation

This lateral measures 5-11/16 inches long by 7/8 inch in diameter and threads in with a 3/4 inch MPT connection. Length, diameter and thread all have to match, so check all three against the one you removed. While the sand is out and the hub is exposed, look over every lateral in the set rather than only the one that failed. They age together, and a second teardown to change another one is the expensive part of this repair.

Why is sand coming back into my pool?
A cracked lateral or a broken standpipe is the usual reason. The slots in the lateral are sized to pass water and hold sand, so once one splits the bed drains through it.
